Rewatch webinar: PPE and DPP’s – EMMA Safety Footwear

We hosted another lunchtime webinar featuring Elroy Bongers, Head of Innovation and Sustainability at EMMA Safety Footwear. As a pioneer in the field of circular personal protective equipment (PPE), EMMA is setting the standard for how safety and sustainability can be embedded into every stage of the product lifecycle.

The session focused on the integration of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) into PPE — and more specifically, how EMMA uses C_passport®, Cirmar’s DPP solution, to achieve transparency, traceability, and impact reduction across their supply chain.

Serious steps towards circularity: EMMA’s mission

For EMMA, circularity is more than a goal — it’s a company principle. With decades of experience, the brand has reinvented safety footwear to meet the demands of a world that can no longer afford waste. Starting with reverse logistics, they are working their way towards more circular designs for safety shoes, including circular principles like applying mono materials.

During the webinar, Elroy highlighted how EMMA leverages C_passport® to:

  • Record material composition down to individual components
  • Document and verify end-of-life scenarios such as reuse, repair, and recycling
  • Calculate environmental impacts at product level, including carbon footprint
  • Communicate transparently with customers, partners, and regulators

With our platform, EMMA transforms product data into actionable insights that guide decision-making and build trust with their stakeholders.

Legislative Momentum: DPPs and PPE Regulation on the Horizon

The push for Digital Product Passports is not just industry-led — it is becoming a regulatory requirement. Under the European Green Deal and the upcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), DPPs will soon become mandatory for a wide range of product categories, including textiles, batteries, electronics — and notably, Personal Protective Equipment.

For the PPE sector, this means:

  • Compliance with DPP mandates expected in the coming years
  • Product-level traceability and documentation will become non-negotiable
  • Integration with existing standards like CE marking and safety certifications
  • Data transparency will shift from a competitive advantage to a legal obligation

Companies that proactively implement DPPs now, like EMMA, will be well-positioned to navigate this evolving landscape — ensuring both compliance and leadership in sustainable innovation.
